What are Sand Fleas?
Sand fleas, also known as “beach fleas” and “mole crickets,” are crustaceans found living on beaches and coastal areas. Sand fleas are tan or brown, 2-3 millimeters long and have a long abdomen, with long legs and antennae. They lie just beneath the surface of the sand waiting for their prey.
What are Symptoms of Sand Flea Bites?
Sand flea bites typically result in the following symptoms:
- Itching – the most common symptom of sand flea bites is itching and discomfort
- Pain – a sensation of burning or stinging can sometimes accompany a sand flea bite
- Redness and Swelling – the area where the flea bit can become red and swollen.
How to Treat Sand Flea Bites?
To reduce the itching, burning, and swelling associated with sand flea bites, you can try:
- Applying a cold compress to the affected area
- Using an anti-itch cream or hydrocortisone cream to reduce itching and inflammation
- Taking an antihistamine for relief from itching
- Avoiding scratching the bite
