Do Bed Bugs Die With Alcohol?

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on blood. Crawling between mattresses and clothes, they can make your home and life uncomfortable. You’d be forgiven for thinking that rubbing alcohol, a common disinfectant, could help you get rid of these pests. So, do bed bugs die with alcohol?

Using Alcohol on Bed Bugs

Using alcohol might seem like an easy solution to this problem, but unfortunately, there’s no clear answer. It may be effective when sprayed directly onto visible bed bugs, but it’s unlikely to be able to penetrate deeper, between cracks and crevices where bed bugs hide.

Bed bugs have been found to have a tolerance for certain insecticides and chemicals, so it’s possible that some could be resistant to alcohol. Some bed bugs have even been found to be resistant to high concentrations of alcohol, so it
may not be the most effective method.

Ways to Cure a Bed Bug Infestation

Although it might not be the most effective method, there are a few steps you can take to help get rid of bed bugs.

  • Vacuum or wash bedding – Removing bedding both inside and around your mattress can help reduce the number of bed bugs in your house.
  • Encasing mattress and box spring – Investing in a cover for both the mattress and box spring can help prevent bed bugs from reaching the inside, and make it easier to clean the surface.
  • Applying insecticides – Using an insecticide approved by the Environmental Protection Agency is the most effective way to get rid of bed bugs. Apply it in areas where bed bugs are likely to hide.

Rubbing alcohol may not be the most effective way to get rid of bed bugs, but there are still several other methods you can use. Vacuuming, washing bedding and applying insecticides are all safer and more effective ways of controlling a bed bug infestation. So, do bed bugs die with alcohol? The answer depends on the individual case, but it’s unlikely to be the most effective solution.
