Chiggers and aphids are two commonly encountered pests, which can cause a variety of problems for homeowners. Here, we discuss the differences between these two pests and what makes them so troublesome.
Chigger
Chiggers are minuscule mites that are commonly found outdoors. They are typically yellow or red in color and measure just 1/150 of an inch in size. Chiggers feed on plants and animals, mostly mammals such as animals and humans, but they can also feed on plants.
Chiggers are a nuisance to humans because of their biting behaviour. Chiggers will bite and latch on to skin, often resulting in intense itching, along with redness and swelling. Chiggers can also spread diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Ehrlichiosis.
Aphids
Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that live on the leaves of plants. They range in color from green to black and measure just 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch in size. Aphids feed on plant sap, which they extract via their piercing-sucking mouthparts.
Although aphids do not bite or sting humans, they can cause serious problems for homeowners and gardeners. They can transmit plant viruses, reduce plant vigor and growth, or even kill plants. Additionally, large populations of aphids can cause sticky honeydew, which can coat leaves, flowers, and branches.
Differences Between Chiggers and Aphids
- Biting/Stinging Ability: Chiggers can bite, sting and cause intense itching, while aphids are incapable of biting or stinging.
- Food Source: Chiggers feed on animals and plants, while aphids feed solely on plant sap.
- Infectious Diseases: Chiggers can transmit diseases to humans, while aphids cannot.
- Damage to Plants: Aphids cause extensive damage to plants, while chiggers do not.
